Reverend James B. Logan was born in New York City to Deacons James and Mamie Logan. He attended public schools in Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from York College of the City University of New York. Upon graduation from college, Rev. Logan worked for over 15 years in both the public and private sectors. His professional and career experience included a breadth of responsibilities in administration, human resources, training and development, clinical services, career coaching and benefits management. These assignments spanned industries such as Health Care,
Pharmaceutical, Outplacement Services and Sports Management. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the College of New Rochelle, Manhattan Campus, teaching classes in Theology and The Black Church.
Reverend Logan received his spiritual foundation from his parents, grandparents and the Convent Avenue Baptist Church family located in New York City. It is here that he began developing leadership skills from childhood through young adulthood participating and serving in various ministries including the Children and Youth Usher Boards, The Youth Choir, The Sunday School, and The Baptist Youth Fellowship. He also provided leadership over The Board of Christian Education’s Leadership Development initiative and the Marriage and Singles Enrichment Conference.
Reverend Logan preached his initial sermon and was licensed on January 8, 1989 under the leadership of Convent’s former Pastor, the late Reverend Dr. Clarence P. Grant. In January of 1991, Reverend Logan graduated from New York Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree. Shortly thereafter he was ordained into the gospel ministry on January 12, 1992. He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Ministry degree in Christian Education at Dallas Theological Seminary with concentrations in Marriage and Family Ministry and Change Management.
Reverend Logan recognizes that God has used his diverse professional experience in the marketplace to complement his ministerial and pastoral experience, bringing relevant, relatable and relationship skills to bear. After all, “no one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care”.
Reverend Logan has 18 years of pastoral care leadership at Convent including 12 years as the Children and Youth Pastor. For the last five years, Reverend Logan served full-time as the first Executive Minister of Convent under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Jesse T. Williams, Jr., Senior Pastor. In this capacity, he played a key role in the strategic planning of various aspects of the ministry, providing organizational leadership and support, employee development and church administration. His ministerial and pastoral responsibilities included bible study, teaching, preaching, counseling, officiating weddings and funerals, serving as a clergy liaison to the community police precinct and a myriad of other responsibilities in the nearly 3,000 member congregation. Following the Apostle Paul’s confession in 1 Corinthians 9:22, Reverend Logan endeavors to “…become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.”
On June 16, 2013 Reverend Logan was called as the sixth Senior Pastor of the Messiah Baptist Church, Bridgeport, CT. He is honored and humbled by such an assignment from God and looks forward to partnering with the disciples of Messiah, bringing the lost to Christ, nurturing transformed lives and building new bridges of hope in Bridgeport and the surrounding communities of Connecticut. His pastoral calling verse serves as the foundation for ministry objectives at Messiah: John 21:17, “He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?.... Jesus saith unto him, feed my sheep.”
Reverend Logan is happily married to his beautiful wife, Virginia Caroline who continues to serve faithfully with him in ministry and undergirds him in prayer. Reverend and Mrs. Logan are the proud parents of two lovely daughters, Olivia Savannah, a junior in college and Sydney Alexandria, a high school student. Pastor James B. and Lady Virginia C. have each other’s back as they walk in their new roles at Messiah Baptist Church of Bridgeport, Connecticut and believe that through Christ, the best is yet to come!
